Terminology: “Artistic Director”

The artistic director of a theater company is responsible for choosing material to be produced, hiring creative personnel, and otherwise developing the company's overall artistic mission. The artistic director may be the founder and owner of the theater or may serve at the pleasure of a board of directors. The artistic director's involvement in any given production can very greatly from one company to another and even from one show to the next.
