Terminology: “Aside”

An aside is a dramatic convention in which an actor in a play (or, less commonly, a movie or television show) makes a comment that is not meant to be heard by other characters sharing the stage or screen. It may represent the character speaking under his or breath (sotto voce) or having an unspoken thought, or it may be an out-of-character comment directly to the audience. Sometimes the nature of an aside is made clearer by a change in lighting or a tableau.

An aside can be one word or a few lines. A longer digression is called a soliloquy or monologue.
