Terminology: “Backstory”

A character's backstory consists of events imagined to have happened to the character prior to the events of the script, particularly those most relevant to the present story. A combination of dialogue and flashbacks may reveal the backstory of the protagonist and, to a lesser extent, supporting characters. Minor characters usually have no explicit backstory.

Many actors find it useful to create elaborate backstories for their characters in order to bring more of a sense of reality to their performances, while others prefer to rely on information presented in the script.
