An extra is an actor who has a nonspeaking, non-singing, or nondancing role in a production, usually appearing only briefly, often unidentifiable on screen, and portraying an anonymous character such as a member of a crowd. A featured extra is more prominent than the others and may be portraying a named character.
On professional film and TV productions, extras usually work for low pay and no onscreen credit. On amateur productions, they may receive courtesy billing.
Collectively, extras are referred to as atmosphere or background (even when they appear in the foreground of a shot).
On stage, extras are sometimes called supernumeraries, supers or (in opera companies) spear-carriers.
