Terminology: “Lot”

A lot is the real estate occupied by a movie or television studio, which includes administrative offices and production facilities. A studio lot is generally enclosed by walls, with tightly controlled access through a limited number of gates, although parts of some studios are viewable on guided tours.

A backlot is a portion of the studio lot used for exterior shooting. It may include undeveloped land as well as areas that can stand in for city streets.
